Key Characteristics

  • A Lifelong Learner. If you don’t visit PPCHero multiple times weekly, this position probably isn’t for you. In the world of online marketing: it’s learn or die. It’s the difference between having 5 years of experience, and repeating 5 of your first years.

  • Exceptional Paid Traffic Skills: You know the relationship between quality score, CPC, and ad rank. You can add 500 negative keywords to an account in under 15 minutes. At smaller agencies, it’s normal to be responsible for developing strategy – and implementation of that strategy.
  • Strategic Vision: When a campaign doesn’t work out the way you wanted it to, what is your reaction? Do your emotions impact your performance, or do you have the strategic vision to map your way out of a valley. Can you convey confidence to your clients?
  • A Great Teacher. Can you help clients understand when a dip in CTR isn’t a bad thing? How about letting them know why sending informational searches to a product page isn’t going to produce many sales? How do you explain the pro’s and con’s of oCPM vs CPC on Facebook Ads?

  • Confident & Self-Driven: A client wants to roll out an all broad-match strategy, paired up with targeting 100,000,000 million people on Facebook. Do you have the initiative to hop on the phone with them and the confidence to explain why it’s not a good idea to go that broad? Are you comforting enough to not make them feel foolish in the process?

  • Online Communication Skills. For our top-tier clients, support tickets need to be cleared out 3x a day during work days. Do you inbox-zero, or do you lose messages regularly and have to explain “sorry I missed your message”?

  • Analytic Skills. Do you feel like giving someone a high-five after you create a Pivot Table? Do you know when to use VLOOKUP? When you look at account level metrics, do you have the urge to dig deeper and find the real reasons for performance changes?

  • Salesmanship. Many times, we are only as good as the client thinks we are. When things go well – can you link our work to increased performance? When things aren’t going well – can you get people on board with the vision to improve? If FB Ads are going to be helpful to a client, can you explain why?

  • Ethical & Honest: We don’t work with adult sites, non-family safe companies, and view marketing as a way to connect great organizations with people who can benefit from their solutions. We’re proud to talk about what we do or who we work with at the dinner table with our families.
  • Technologically Inclined: You don’t need instructions on how to take screenshots, and you’re interested in faster ways to do so.

Details of the Position

  • Everyone Does Support:Working at a small boutique offering like Search Scientists will involve the full spectrum of account management. You’ll not only be the point person for the customer (answering emails, hopping on the phone), but for most tasks, you’ll also be the implementing the changes to the account (new ads, audience split testing, negative keyword research). We know this is different than the usual agency work, but it’s okay – our customers love being in contact with their account managers.
  • This is a real, full-time, permanent position catered to professionals more than travelers. While this position can be done anywhere in the world, and Search Scientists are spread around the globe, this position is not well suited for travelers who move very-frequently. Unless you’re the rare kind of person who can get meaningful work done in a new location every month, we’ve found that long-term stability is required for increased PPC performance and client relationship building.
  • “About” 40 hours a week. At Search Scientists you’re not required to punch the time-clock, and there is no time-tracking software installed on your machine. However, the workload is built around an expectation of about 40 hours a week. If you can get your results and client relationships awesome in less than that – then right on!
  • Work as a Contractor: Search Scientists is a USA company, so if you’re a non-US Citizen, you can skip this part. For those who are US citizens, you’ll be paid as a contractor. Basically, we were told that since we have no physical location, and we can’t control your physical work environment, that we can’t claim you as an employee. This may change in the future. All this really means right now is that you file your own taxes and handle your own health insurance. In 2016, we are moving the company to Puerto Rico, and you’re invited!
  • Salary: We do something unique here at Search Scientists, that our team members love. We’ve been profiled for our unique payment strategy.
    • Salary & Growth Details: The goal is to be paid 40% of your client total revenue handled. For example, if you handle 10,000 worth of client revenue, you will receive 40% of that. (4,000/mo). This 4,000/mo is the basic expectation for a productive Search Scientists. Want to hustle, work hard, and handle 15,000 dollars of client revenue a month? Then get paid 40% of that and make 6,000/mo. Let’s talk about a basic growth plan for this position, assuming the person starts on the 1st of the month:
      • Start: 30% of Client Revenue Handled for first 6 months from your start date.
      • After 6 months: Move to 35% of Client Revenue Handled.
      • After 12 months: Move to our 40% Target.
      • First 2 Months of Payments:
        • Start on the 1st of the month
        • First Payment on the 15th: 1,000
        • Second Payment on the 1st of the next month: 1,000
        • Third Payment on the 15th of the second month: 1,000
        • You will then move to 30% of total client revenue handled.
        • On-board time: pick up 1-2 clients a week
    • Bonus Opportunities: Working efficiently through your client load? Raise your hand, and we’ll send you another client, with 40% of their revenue getting added onto your monthly salary. For example, if you move from 40% at 10,000/mo, you can grab another client and do 40% at 11,500). Interested in blogging? Add blogging to your mix and receive percentage points above 40%. Want to answer questions on Quora with a link back to SearchScientists? Increase your percentage. Being a small, lean, rapidly growing company, you have plenty of growth being an account manager, managing others, marketing our company, and beyond.

Perks

  • Get Treated like a Responsible Professional and Create your own Schedule: Are you naturally a night owl? Do you like to divide your 8 hour work day with a 2 hour nap? Want to go surfing Thursday morning and work into the evening? One of the biggest perks is dividing up your work day and work week how you’d like!
  • No Commute: Think about the time you spend getting ready, and commuting to work. The US Census estimates the average commute is about an hour a day. Working for Search Scientists means you instantly get back 20 hours a month spent commuting!
  • Coworking Space Reimbursement: Like working around others? We’ll reimburse $100/mo of your coworking costs.
  • Gym/Physical Activity Reimbursement: Let’s face it, humans weren’t made to sit at a computer. You’re encouraged to exercise! So whether you do MMA in the evenings, are a member at your gym, or like to go diving, get 50/mo reimbursed for your costs of exercise.
  • Work from Anywhere with Strong Internet: Want to work from a log cabin in Canada or a sunny villa in Mexico? Go ahead! As long as there is strong internet, you’re in business!
  • Professional & Personal Development: Want to buy that new book on online marketing? How about something on personal productivity? Anything on Lynda you want to learn about? We’ve got a membership to several online marketing educational sites, a library full of PDF’s and audiobooks, but if there is something else you’re looking to learn about, we’re here to help!
  • Plenty of Training Available: Are you a AdWords Jedi but a Facebook Ads Padawon? We’ll help you improve your skills, confidence, and personal knowledge base in a comfortable learning environment.
  • Reasonable Work Load: We’re not one of those agencies that will give you 100 clients to work with. For this position, the number of client accounts you will be working with will be manageable in well under 40 hours/wk. We don’t have a non-technical sales team that is going to oversell impossible expectations for you to work with.
  • The Ground Floor: Join us now, excel, and you can find yourself as the head of PPC, on our blog, in our podcast, or more. If you’ve got ideas to help our high-growth start-up, let’s chat!
  • An Executive Team that Cares: We’re inspired to make Search Scientists the best PPC agency – remote or in-person – for our team members…and we’re not afraid to show it.
  • Paid-Paid Vacations: Want to go visit the Search Scientists in London? How about taking a trip to LA to see the other Search Scientists. Receive a stipend for visiting your coworkers in new locations! We’re also planning on a team meetup this year.
  • Work with an Optimizer. That’s right, our account managers get to work with another PPC professional who helps with routine tasks, like negative keyword research. This allows our Account Managers to focus on big-wins, and strategy changes.

A Day in the Life of a Search Scientists

To give you an idea of the normal expectations of a Search Scientist, here’s how a sample day looks:

Greg (The early riser with an hour break)

  • Wake up 7am
  • 7am-8am: Answer customer emails (schedule any tasks that popup from emails into our project management board)
  • 8am-8:30am: Eat breakfast, read.
  • 830am-Noon: Handle client work (optimizing accounts)
  • Noon-1230pm: Afternoon email check.
  • 12:30pm-1pm: Lunch break, walk the dog.
  • 1pm-4:30pm: Handle client work (optimizing accounts) and end-of-day email check
  • Normally, Greg averages 1 client phone call per day.

If Greg wants to take extra time to walk the dog, he can. If he wanted to go for a morning jog, he can. The beauty of remote work is not about having no schedule – it comes from creating a schedule that works best for you!

Distributed Teams are the Future, and We’re Happy to be Part of the Club

Our friends at 37Signals put together a great video on remote work.

We believe that work should be integrated into our lives the way we decide. It is very possible to live away from the stress, bureaucracy, and petty office politics that drag down so many normal work environments. Work can be a place of stress-free productivity, where the work speaks for itself. Treating people like responsible professionals and building relationships based on trust are the cornerstones of what we do.

“The lifestyle compatibility you can have with remote work is really great. It’s really compatible with looking at your whole life and saying ‘These are the things I like to do besides work'”

David Hansson – 37 Signals
